Rowel Form Study
A foundational study examining barbed wire as both material and artifact.
A foundational study examining barbed wire as both material and artifact.
The rowel is one of the defining components of the Western spur, yet its design is often overlooked in favor of the complete object.
This study isolates the rowel from its original context, enlarging it to reveal the geometry, balance, and craftsmanship that contribute to both its function and visual identity.

The Study
Mounted on a hand-charred wood panel with a vegetable-tanned leather field, the museum scale steel rowel transforms a familiar working component into an educational object. The presentation encourages closer observation of the form itself, its symmetry, tooth profile, center hub, and construction, inviting viewers to appreciate the design decisions that have shaped generations of Western makers.
