Rowel Study No. 01
Six, Eight and Ten Points
Each representing a shift in how pressure is delivered, perceived, and refined.
Each representing a shift in how pressure is delivered, perceived, and refined.
In the American West, the rowel was not decoration, it was communication.
Subtle changes in form altered how pressure met the horse: broader contact, sharper articulation, or refined control.
This study isolates that progression through three distinct point counts—6, 8, and 10—presented together as a single composition.
Object Details
This study brings together three rowel forms drawn from working and ceremonial traditions. Each reflects a different philosophy of interaction between rider and horse—ranging from subtle precision to expressive design.

The Study
6-Point Rowel - Broad Contact
Wider spacing creates a more deliberate, less frequent point of contact.
Often associated with more direct, assertive communication.
8-Point Rowel - Balanced Transition
An intermediate form—balancing presence with control.
A versatile structure seen across working traditions.
10-Point Rowel - Refined Articulation
Closer spacing allows for more nuanced, continuous interaction.
Represents a move toward precision and subtlety.
Together, these forms reveal how variation in geometry, rather than size or material, shaped the language between rider and horse.

Forms of Contact
Provenance West
Not a replica. Not a decoration.
A study of form drawn from the tools that shaped the West.
Limited Availability
Each Provenance West rowel study is assembled individually in small production runs.
Only 25 editions of Rowel Study No. 01: 6 • 8 • 10 will be produced.
Because of the handcrafted assembly process and the variation in sourced rowels, no two studies are entirely identical. Subtle differences in patina, finish, and material character are considered part of the authenticity of the piece.
Once the edition is complete, the study will be retired from production.
A handcrafted Provenance West Object
Each study is a study of Western horsemanship, material culture, and form presented as a collectible artifact
